Alexandra has rounded up all the need-to-knows on:
-
- Hiring a genealogy specialized tour guide and doing research prior to your visit to the Old Country
- Identifying family homes
- Trying to make contact with potential relatives
- Getting access to otherwise unavailable places and people
- Useful items to bring over
so as to make planning easy once the world is ready to travel again. Finally, get a glimpse of what your genealogy trip might look like and also enjoy photos of some ancestry tours that Alexandra has conducted in the Banat area.
RESEARCH OR BUST: Essential Romanian Records Search
Saturday, Apr. 10, 2021 (10:30 a.m. – Noon Central Time)
This session will answer many of your questions about what it takes to dig deep for your roots in Romania, which is one of the most difficult locations to research since most records are not digitized nor online. Then, whether you will go to the Archives in person or will hire a researcher, learn what you need to know in advance. Thus, information learned could be applied to research of ancestors of many ethnic backgrounds for example, Hungarian, Germanic, Serbian, etc., not just Romanians. Discussion will include:
-
- Records and where to find them; differences between church and civil records
- Record availability; history and holdings of churches, local governments
- Archives and their regional differences with specifics to Banat and Transylvania
- Politics and inconsistencies of record keeping; challenges and considerations
- Steps of the process to access and copy records in Romania (remote or in-person); planning, rules and regulations, fees, etc.
Alexandra will also address what you may find in the records; typical layouts, languages, scripts and translations. In addition, she will also give an update on the National Archives closures due to pandemic.
